The Mercury News: New 3-D Effect Could be a Bright Spot for Sun

“The Web browser on Hideya Kawahara’s laptop seems to play mind
games with you, drawing you into the computer screen with
three-dimensional images that float in space.

“A Web page appears to be transparent, allowing you to see the
details of other pages behind it. Kawahara grabs the page with the
mouse and stacks it sideways so that it becomes just one among
several books on a shelf. Then he spins it around so that he can
write a Post-it note on the back.

“It seems like Kawahara should be at Microsoft developing a
future version of Windows software. But the 33-year-old creator of
this 3-D effect, dubbed Looking Glass, is a programmer at Sun
Microsystems in Santa Clara. He’s part of a crew creating desktop
software for the freely available Linux operating system. So far,
many desktop versions of Linux emphasize how it can mimic the
functions of Microsoft’s Windows and Office software…”
