“Paying close to RM800 for an original copy of a proprietary
operating system for one or two PCs might not be too much of a
burden to most companies and organisations.

“However, when you need a large number of PCs for schools and
community centres, even paying half that amount per PC becomes a
huge burden.

“‘Software licensing costs typically comprise between 20% to 40%
of the cost of business solutions, and these fees can escalate as a
business grows since many vendors charge by the number of users or
servers,’ said Tan Tze Meng, head of the ‘Awareness subgroup’ at
the Malaysian National Computer Confederation Open Source Special
Interest Group (MNCC-OSSIG)…”
