from Chicago IL, home of the best pizza on the planet.
Tonight LIVE on www.thelinuxshow.com
At 6pm pt, 7pm mt, 8pm ct, and 9pm et…. Kevin Hill, Jeff
Gerhardt, Doc Searls (Linux Journal), Arne Flones and Russ
Pavlicek; are back from last weeks moving/construction disaster.
Well, the new NOC is about half built, and although we are still
waiting for one new T1 to be installed, we will be live tonight. We
do have a great show lined up tonight on The Linux Show!! (Barring
any spirits that may still be pissed off at us.)
Segment One- The News. We will cover
THE HOT NEWS of the last few weeks tonight.
Extended news segment tonight because of last weeks show not
happening. In particular, we will talk MORE about Linux Desktops
including a first look at Red Hats new desktop. NEXT WEEK we will
do a complete review of both 7.3 and the NEW beta that is starting
to show up on the mirrors, but tonight we will take a first peek.
Also:Why the Third World loves Linux, Why are
recording artists lining up against big media, Open Source as a
logical military option(yes we said military) and an RFC draft-
pony based ethernet.
Segment Two- GeekAccess DSL– Geek Goodies from
The Linux Show.
On the show we have been talking about a project we had been
working on (for the better part of the last three months) for our
listeners to get business class DSL installed at your homes,
offices, or clients offices; and at a reasonable price. Business
Class DSL service differs from consumer class DSL (or other
broadband type) in that the user owns their bandwidth and can use
it for any legal purpose, with no restrictions. As of two weeks
ago, that offering is now a firm reality, and we invite all
listeners to participate in this service, before this gets offered
to other high profile geek centric portals.
Our motivation for this is simple. Advertising is down across
the internet. Its hard for everyone to get sponsors. It is real
hard for us to get sponsors, because we have a tendancy to say what
is on our mind.
An example might be the comments Jeff has made about Judy
Chavis, the lead person for all Linux related activities at
The New HP. Jeff’s most recent comment, Judy
Chavis continues in the fine tradition of Compaq/HP executives who
are completely and 100% clueless to what is going on in the Linux
marketplace. Leadership like hers is like having a blind, deaf and
dumb person drive an indy car. It may sound like a good idea (the
blind, deaf and dumb) for a WHO album, but in application it does
not work. I am not saying Judy Chavis is stupid, on the contrary,
she HAS TO BE a genius in her own way. No one rises to the level
she has, without having great skill at corporate political
manuvering. But, she has missed the Cluetrain when it comes to
Linux. Compaq became a leader in delivered Linux servers, because
geeks were putting linux on Compaq Proliant boxes, not because of
some strategy on the part of Compaq or Ms Chavis and her leadership
team.
Our point here at TLS is that because we say
the truth (OK we have trouble shutting up at times) HP/Compaq are
not likly to sponsor us very soon. The focus of the
GeekAccess services, is to provide geek related
portals like ours a revenue stream that helps to pay our bills, by
simply giving geeks a service they would buy anyway.
The specific goal of developing the DSL service (as the first
offering) was to offer a service exclusive to geeks and IT
professionals. The idea was to package a Business Class DSL service
that geeks could make use of, AND have the option of making a few
bucks on at the same time. The point here is that it is business
class service at a price that would allow a IT pro the ability to
resell the service at a profit.
For details check out the url TLS Business
DSL project As a means of really kicking off the program, we
are also announcing a special incentive for you to build Wi-Fi
nodes for your community. Details of the Wi-Fi program are at the
same url.
