VA Linux Systems Tuesday introduced its next generation of
high-performance 2U servers in the VA Linux 2200 series.
The three new servers, the VA Linux 2231, the VA Linux 2241, and
the VA Linux 2251, offer advanced remote management capabilities
using VACM (pronounced vacuum ), VA Linux’s open source cluster
management software, and augment the vendor’s line of ultradense 1U
and 2U rack-optimized Linux servers.
The VA Linux 2200 series features high-performance
dual-processor 2U Linux servers designed for Web serving, streaming
media, and database applications. The new servers have a 133 MHz
front-side bus and two 64-bit/66 MHz PCI expansion slots, and bring
faster performance to the 2200 series. The 2200 series supports
Ultra160 RAID and up to 4 GB of memory and dual GHz Intel Pentium
III processors. Servers can be ordered with a DC power supply for
telco-style installations.
Servers in the 2200 series are capable of holding up to five
hot-swappable 1.6″ drives supporting a total of 365 GB of internal
storage. The 2251 server features the highest internal storage
capacity for a 2U, and it can be further expanded to almost 2 TB of
storage.
By using VACM, enterprises can turn racks of VA Linux 2200
servers into unified server arrays that can be managed securely
from anywhere in the world. VACM is one part of VA Linux’s
management solution that also includes VA SystemImager
software.

Linux servers — together with VACM — provide a powerful solution
for distributed Linux environments,” John T. Hall, senior vice
president of marketing, VA Linux Systems, said in a prepared
statement.
As with all systems from VA Linux, the 2200 series servers have
been designed and configured for optimal Linux performance and
include VA’s Total Linux Coverage support and service as a standard
feature. VA Linux’s Build-to-Order Software Selector, which enables
online configuration of the operating system and applications, is
available for enterprises that require further fine-tuning of the
operating system software.
