“The second generation of eight-way, 550-Mhz Pentium Xeon
servers from Hitachi Data Systems Corp. (HDS) is designed
with ASPs and ISPs in mind. The new server, unveiled today and
shipping next week, will be certified for Microsoft
Windows NT Server, SCO Unixware, Novell Netware, Sun Solaris, and
Linux environments.
‘Hitachi has had their 8-way out ahead of the pack because they
developed their own version ahead of Intel,’ says Kimball Brown,
analyst for Dataquest…”
“While Hitachi is leading the way with its 8-way servers, it may
be a bit ahead of the market’s curve, analysts say. ‘I don’t see
8-ways being a big deal until well into 2000,’ says Brown. ‘Windows
2000 will scale to 8; but for volume deployment, I expect most
users will wait until the first service pack for W2K, probably
summer or fall of 2000.’ “
