Wall Street Journal: IBM to Offer Linux Operating System On Several Servers, Workstations, PCs

“Linux, which is maintained as a hobby by a band of software
writers world-wide, began as a free-of-charge alternative to the
Unix operating system. It has gained ground in recent months
because of its popularity among developers. Linux has also been
helped by persistent delays of a new version of Microsoft Corp.’s
Windows NT operating system.”

“IBM, Armonk, N.Y., does plan to offer service and technical
support for its Linux-based machines, Mr. Hester said. This is
important because Linux doesn’t have a flawless technical
reputation.”
