Which Distribution is Running the 15,000 Server Lawson Deployment?

There was an understandable amount of curiosity about which
Linux distribution will be powering the 15,000 servers IBM is
selling to Japanese convenience store chain Lawson. Reports about
the deal from earlier today, however, said the chain preferred to
avoid having the distribution chosen for the deployment made public
knowledge.

This afternoon, Red Hat’s PR team at Schwartz Communications
released the information that it will, indeed, be Red Hat providing
the operating system for the deployment, which has been described
by IBM as the largest commercial Linux deployment ever.

Along with announcing Red Hat’s involvement, the team included a
brief quote:

“We are very pleased that Lawson, a major Japanese convenience
store operator, has chosen Red Hat,” said Paul McNamara, VP
Products and Platforms. “This is a very large scale project which
validates the global customer affinity for the Red Hat brand and
demonstrates continued strengthening and monetization of our
strategic relationship with IBM.”
