[ Ballmer grabbeed the headline, but more than half the
story is coverage of Linux from Comdex Canada – LT ed. ]

“He also said that Microsoft would not be making applications
for Linux. “I don’t think Linux’s market share at the desktop is
growing very much,” Ballmer said. “If you actually look at the
number of Linux clients out there, it’s actually very
small.”

“But on the show floor Linux was very visible — with many
more people milling around the booths in the Linux Business Expo
section than in the Windows World area.”

“Lineo, a developer of embedded Linux system software, announced
a collaboration with Hitachi Semiconductors, which will feature
products with Lineo Embedix Linux software and Hitachi’s SuperH
RISC processors.”

“NetMaster, Inc. from Chilliwack, B.C., demonstrated Gateway
Guardian, a Linux-based security program that plays off the open
source OS’ scalability. The program secures connections between
2-200 or more computers and its Java interface means people don’t
need to know Linux to install or use it.”
