“Linux is well and truly established as the open source brand of
choice and more and more key embedded and wireless OEMs are
recognizing it as a key technology providing more freedom than the
traditional closed and proprietary model. True, the lack of royalty
payments has a strong pull to such organizations too, as does the
fact that Linux is technically more capable than any other OS on
the market. After all it benefits from millions of hours of
developers’ input, rather than the input of a smaller group of
developers offered by proprietary systems.”

“Even so, while many people can actually develop a product
on Linux, very few can produce and maintain such products as a
Linux OS on a regular basis. This is where Red Hat steps in with
its embedded and wireless strategy which aims to provide a turnkey
solution to key OEMs, the type of solution that guarantees its
customization services will keep up with future
developments.”

“Phil Zamani, Red Hat’s Vice President of Internet Appliances,
explains: “In the past, OEMs have relied heavily on proprietary
systems to develop products in the embedded space. Red Hat is now
targeting the key OEMs in this space to enable them to develop
fully supported, robust, scalable and secure products on the Linux
platform that will keep their product live and their brand strong.
We are in a unique position to do this thanks to smart acquisitions
and investments in the open source market.”
