“A Kansas City Linux firm, Atipa, competing with its Silicon
Valley rival, VA Linux Systems, has acquired a company created by
the founders of an open-source network management/systems
management project.”
“The OpenNMS.org open-source project has created an early
version of its network and systems management software, dubbed
Bluebird, for companies based on the Internet. OpenNMS.org was
founded by Steven Giles, a ten-year veteran of Hewlett-Packard’s
OpenView team. Giles left HP in 1992, founded Onion Peel Software,
a network management software firm, sold it and then founded the
OpenNMS project.”
“The network management/systems management field is currently
dominated by the likes of Computer Associates International’s
CA-Unicenter TNG, HP OpenView, and IBM’s Tivoli Systems. Giles
formed a commercial company, PlatformWorks, to offer the Bluebird
software as a commercial product. Atipa last week acquired
PlatformWorks for an undisclosed amount.”
