“Right now, Linux is the buzz, some even call it “Windows
killer”. I hope the “demise of Windows” soothsayers are talking
about the server market and not the desktop, because Linux has a
long way to go on this one.”

“I popped over to RedHat.com for the free download of Linux 7.0.
The file is a mere 650MB in size — let me take a stab in the dark
and say they aren’t gunning for the dial-up market with this
freebie. If you don’t have the patience for the download and want a
manual, you can buy various versions of Linux for about $30. To see
what all the hubbub was about, I put together a box from parts and
loaded Linux 7.0. The setup was relatively easy and smooth, at the
beginning it asked me if I wanted to load the GUI (Windows like)
interface by default, I said yes. Which one, Gnome or KDS[sic]?
Since I loaded Gnome the first time and found it to be a POS, I
opted for KDS[sic]. Slightly better. I figured I would work with
the interface for a couple of weeks and have a pretty good idea on
how to get around.”

“I am a geek by trade and I couldn’t figure out how to perform
simple tasks like setting the clock or resizing the desktop. Will
some think I am a moron for not knowing how? Yes. Do I care? No.
“You have to do it from the command line, why don’t you use the
command line?” Because I don’t like the command line and neither
does 90 percent of the population.”
