“The new retail price of Red Hat Linux has gone up
substantially, from $50 for version 5.2 to $80 for the current 6.0.
That makes it the most expensive of the official
distributions.”..

“Mark Bolzern, who runs LinuxMall, said the Red Hat price
increase has certainly not gone unnoticed. “Red Hat 6.0 is selling
nowhere near as well as 5.2 when it first came out,” he said.”

“The Red Hat advertisement on the back of the programs at last
week’s Raleigh, N.C. Linux Expo makes specific reference to three
mainstream software chains — CompUSA, Micro Center and Best Buy —
at least some of whom are selling the official Red Hat Linux 6.0
retail for less than the wholesale price offered to other retailers
such as LinuxMall. In fact, LinuxMall and some other smaller Linux
vendors say they are selling Red Hat 6.0 at a loss just to compete
with the large chains.”
