“Momentum is gathering behind the MySQL open source database
initiative. Increased support may help MySQL to break out of its
niche and become a more attractive alternative to proprietary
database software.”

“Specialist computer maker VA Linux Systems is the latest firm
to back MySQL. VA will give MySQL financial aid and co-sponsor
service and support programmes aimed at enticing large enterprise
customers.”

“VA’s backing follows another endorsement by development tools
maker Progress Software, which recently invested $2.5m in MySQL and
started a new firm, NuSphere, to provide professional services for
the database. NuSphere will also sell its own MySQL multi-platform
distribution and related open source products.”
