Evans Data released the results of a survey of “Linux
developers” yesterday indicating that of all the Linux
distributions, FreeBSD came in fourth in popularity. This raised a
few eyebrows.

Since then, the firm has removed FreeBSD from the results table on its site
and placed a small message at the bottom:

“It has been brought to our attention that FreeBSD is not a
Linux distribution. The data was revised to exclude FreeBSD, and
the numbers above reflect the corrections. We apologize for the
mistake.”

The revised results for the survey didn’t do much to change the
outcome, though. Red Hat continues to lead with 78 percent; while
SuSE, Mandrake, and Caldera all came in at or around 22 percent.
Debian took over the fourth place spot vacated by FreeBSD at 17.9
percent. Nor does it answer another question, which is how many
other, non-Linux answers were culled from the responses.
