LinuxStockNews: Linux and Graphics Development (July 10, 2000)

Linux is set to impact both the high-end graphics users as
well as desktop users. Technical demands from sophisticated users
are being felt by hardware producers as they continue to improve
drivers and capabilities. Software producers will continue to port
established graphics development tools to Linux and native Linux
graphics tools will be developed.

“As is the case with many Linux development segments, there are
a number of open source groups devoted to furthering the graphics
cause. In our previous graphics and gaming newsletter, we discussed
OpenGL and its impact on graphics. Other projects such as xFree86,
GIMP, GNOME and Blender are either open source or free
distributions assisting the cause. Criticism may be levied against
the ease of use factor when one looks at the efforts of the
aforementioned collaborations. Fortunately, some of the major
graphics hardware and software producers have embraced these
efforts and combined them with their own products in a friendlier
result.”
