LinuxWorld.com.au: Lineo and Trolltech on embedded Linux

“The end of October saw the release of Trolltech’s
(www.trolltech.com ) Qt/Embedded Linux development tool under the
GNU General Public Licence. This will allow developers of embedded
Linux devices use Qt/Embedded without the restriction of being
unable to modify the source code. A well known developer of
Embedded Linux systems is Lineo, which stands to benefit from this
decision.”

“LinuxWorld.com.au spoke to two key figures of this embedded
Linux development: Warwick Allison – the project manager for
Qt/Embedded at Trolltech; and Lyle Ball – the vice president of
communications and co-founder of Lineo.”

“As a start, both representatives were asked for their views on
the embedded Linux market’s current status. “The embedded Linux
market is young but very exciting,” said Trolltech’s Allison. “We
believe that the GUI has been the most lacking aspect of embedded
Linux. Drawing directly on the strength of Qt on X11, Qt/Embedded
is a total solution to that lack, and is available right now.”
Lineo also sees embedded Linux as a maturing technology, and
according to Ball, “Lineo believes that this is the year for Linux
to gain broad market share in the embedded system market. Lineo is
aggressively developing technologies that extend Linux’s ability to
be used in more devices.”
