” As a biophysicist working on hydrodynamic modeling of
molecules such as proteins and DNA, he needed the systems to run
large applications involving complex calculations. He found the
systems slow, often crashing in the middle of an application
run.

“‘I was unhappy with the performance,’ recalls Demeler, an
assistant professor who directs the bioinfomatics core facility at
the Health Science Center.

“Right about that time, a new Unix-based operating system called
Linux was emerging, and available for free. Demeler acquired the
‘open source’ operating system, which allows codes to be tweaked to
the individual user’s needs, and installed it on the laboratory
computers…”
