“Dell has stayed with operating systems that run on Intel
platforms, focusing largely on Windows and more recently endorsing
Linux. Although Dell has installed Unix versions such as SCO
UnixWare, the firm’s founder said he was convinced that what he
called “proprietary Unix” operating systems were doomed to failure.
He added that the firm has no plans to license or develop a
high-end Unix server.”
“A key driver in the disappearance of most Unixes will be
Linux, said Dell at a meeting with media in London last Tuesday. “I
see Linux as a great alternative to proprietary Unix,” he said.
“Over time the proprietary Unix market will lose out to
Linux.”
“Dell predicted that just as PCs had reduced sales of
workstations, so servers would follow the same trend. “When a new
product comes out there is a high margin and fewer suppliers. The
workstation has moved to standard x86 machines and I think the same
will happen in servers. Windows 2000 and Linux will get us there,”
he said.”
