MachineOfTheMonth: Decryption for the masses [GnuPG]

“Let’s say that President Bill Clinton wants the American public
to read a statement by him. It could be a long speech (a state of
the union address) or it might be a short statement (concerning a
specific topic). How is Bill going to make sure that the exact
words he used are what make it to the newspapers and onto cnn?”

“Let’s ask another question. A few months back, the popular
radio personality Art_Bell was involved unwillingly in a
controversy about a supposed letter he authored and posted to a
newsgroup. This letter was not something that he wanted to be
associated with and he received a lot of hate mail because of it.
Mail from people that thought it came from him just because his
name was on it. Certainly, in this day and age, emails can be
forged
and things of that nature.”

“So how can a person make sure that they are protected from
unscrupulous individuals that want to put words in their mouth to
serve their own purposes? Again, we will look to some of the basic
features of the GnuPG program and of public-key cryptography in
general.
Seeing how this works will provide a solution to the
two situations above, theoretically.”
