PC Week: Open source meets the ‘Baywatch’ factor

[ Thanks to Fred Dickey

“The jury is still out on how well the “trust no one” mentality
mixes with open source. There’s the good side of open source-the
fact that I get to examine all of the code running on my system.
But the bad side of open source is that you’d have to be very, very
bored to spend time examining the endless lines of code in that
make up open-source software. Still, as is well-evidenced by the
fact that millions watch “Baywatch,” there must be a lot of very,
very bored people out there…”

“But the problems don’t stop there-what about security updates
in the open-source world? PC Week Labs recently conducted a
security test of Web programming models, and we didn’t apply the 21
patches that are available for Red Hat’s 6.1 version of Linux.”

Never mind that I would have missed “Baywatch” to install
these 21 patches.
Disregard that Novell, Microsoft and Sun all
make clusters of patches available for their systems so they can be
installed as one file. And pay no attention that you have a single
source to look for all security updates.”
