Boston Globe: Linux breathes fire into old-time Microsoft rival

Maybe this Linux thing is for real. Microsoft Corp. is
about the only major company left that isn’t cranking out Linux
versions of high-quality software. And it’s getting so just about
anybody can get a basic Linux setup going without an advanced
degree in software engineering.

“I found out the not-so-hard way last week with some help from
Corel Corp. It’s a Canadian firm that made a name for itself with
high-class graphics software, only to almost self-destruct in a
futile effort to compete with Microsoft in the office suite market.
The near-death experience has done nothing to impart a new sense of
humility to Corel CEO Michael Cowpland. Far from it-Cowpland’s
teeing it up again, and this time he’s using Linux to go after
Microsoft’s core market in operating systems.”

“The company sent me a copy of their new Corel Linux product.
The basic package costs $59.95, but Corel sent me the $89.95 deluxe
pack with some extra software and a cute little Linux penguin
mascot toy.”
