“…There are an inordinate number of window managers for Linux
out there. While you are stuck with what you’re given in Windows,
in Linux there are lots of choices, so mos people should be able to
find their ideal manager. I can think of six different, and
reasonably decent, window managers without even trying.”
“One point I should make is, while many people believe they are,
GNOME and similar applications, are not window managers. They are
applications that run on TOP of an existing window manager and
provide additional functionality to the manager. They also force a
system performance trade-off on lower machines.”
“For this review, I’m going to cover my window manager of
choice, Enlightenment, available from the Enlightenment website.
Enlightenment is the default window manager that is installed
with the GNU object modelling environment (GNOME) in most Linux
distributions, so a lot of people’s experience with Enlightenment
(or E) has been with GNOME. This is more than a little unfair, as E
is a fantastic window manager without GNOME running on it. I
decided to try it back in January when the K desktop environment
(KDE) was hogging my system and causing major instability.”
