Numerous readers have sent this story in. Dell, which this
article says is the number one manufacturer of PC’s in the world
(recently passing Compaq) has some executives on record as saying
that while Linux is still very interesting as a server technology,
there’s little interest in Linux desktops outside a potential
market in high-end engineering and graphics workstations.
We’ve had a few other news stories written around the notion
that Linux as a desktop OS is a doomed proposition, but this one is
interesting to us because though it can’t resist mentioning Eazel,
it at least gets some input from a major PC manufacturer instead of
offering half-baked analysis based on pulling some headlines out of
a hat.
“”It’s still a fundamentally technical operating
system,” said Steve Smith, Dell’s European market development
manager for client systems. “It’s very easy for someone who doesn’t
know what they’re doing to break. It’s not designed for the novice
user.”Microsoft’s grip on the applications market, with Office, also
shows no sign of weakening, Smith said.”
