LinuxPR: 3D UI, Synapse, Released for Linux

“There are several relatively obvious advantages to a 3D
interface, namely, infinitely more desktop space than a traditional
2D GUI, and consistency across 3D applications. … Synapse
basically does for 3D what the Macintosh did for 2D.”

“Current X-based attempts at a consistent desktop are all just
rehashed attempts to make Linux look more like Microsoft Windows;
they have unnecessarily large memory footprints, and don’t help
Linux much in the graphics world.

“…Synapse will give the user the option of using a much faster
internal protocol when Synapse is used on a single machine. A wire
protocol, which enables remote execution of Synapse applications,
is also available. This makes Synapse much faster and less
error-prone than X-Windows under normal desktop use, while allowing
the same remote capability when desired.”
