“From the moment we entered the theatre it was apparent that
this was going to be an interesting hour – Raster himself was
almost jumping up and down at the front of the theatre, grinning
ear to ear, and the screen projector was showing the first slide of
a StarOffice presentation entitled “My New Toy”.”
“Raster’s topic (and new toy) turned out to be his latest
project, which he calls “EVAS”. EVAS is what Raster described as a
‘canvas’, and seems to be the latest exciting development in the
Linux window manager world. EVAS provides the possibility for
Raster to build a whole slew of features into the up and coming
Enlightenment 0.17, as well as demonstrating just how powerful
XFree86 can be when integrated well with the OpenGL libraries.”
“EVAS will bring anti-aliased text (possible, but not quite
easily useable in KDE), hardware accelerated image scaling and
Alpha blending to the Linux desktop. Raster uses direct calls to
the OpenGL libraries to make this happen. When answering questions
about EVAS, it was put to Raster that there are other canvasses
available for X – the Gnome canvas for one – and Raster’s answer to
this was simply that EVAS had one thing that none of the other
canvasses had – direct hardware acceleration. EVAS’s primary job is
to display objects – however it is the way that it does this that
is important.”
