Reuters: Judge orders Microsoft to surrender e-mail

“District Court Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson on Thursday
ordered Microsoft to turn over several e-mails that government
lawyers hope will help prove their antitrust case against the
software giant.”

“Maritz testified that the Windows operating system faces
competition from the Linux operating system, which can be loaded
for free from the World Wide Web or purchased from any one of
several producers.”

“Linux is a very complete and sophisticated operating system,”
said Maritz, Microsoft’s group vice president for platforms and
applications. “There are and will be large numbers of applications
available for it.”

“But government lawyer David Boies later pointed to internal
e-mails by Microsoft Chief Executive Bill Gates, to show that Gates
does not consider Linux to be a threat.”
