“For some customers, the upgrade might be worthwhile.
According to our tests, W2K’s performance and stability are much
better than NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a running on the identical
symmetric multiprocessing system. Server administration also is
greatly improved. And we’re impressed with Windows 2000 Pro on the
desktop, as well.”
“Unfortunately, W2K on the server is a mixed blessing. It
won’t run properly on many older, weaker servers, and there are
very few W2K certified apps. You also won’t get any performance
benefit from W2K on single-processor systems. Finally, the
operating system lacks comprehensive device support.”
“So should you migrate today? Should you try to persuade
customers and partners to do it? Our results provide insight into
what you may be up against if you opt to take the plunge.”
