became real as Linux built up a head of steam that attracted major
media attention.”

‘Lately, everyone’s getting this feeling that this is an
overnight phenomenon,” said Torvalds, when Intel unveiled a
strategic investment in Linux distributor Red Hat Software Inc.
“I’ve been seeing this for seven years.”

The tumult was enough to attract Microsoft’s eye. Company
President Steve Ballmer said the open-source movement was on
Microsoft’s radar screen — and indeed it was, as Microsoft
subsequently leaked a series of strategy documents relating to its
own plans involving open source.’
