“The first Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) is open for
business in Portland, Oregon. With a US$24 million bankroll, its
goal is to provide Linux and other open source developers with
access to expensive high-end hardware on which they can test their
software.“
“First conceived of nearly three years ago by then president of
SuSE, Scott McNeil, and first announced last summer by HP, Intel,
IBM, and NEC, the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) today became
an operating reality. The first four companies that sponsored the
OSDL have now grown to 19, and they’ve put up a total of US$24
million to fund it in an 11,000-square-foot computing center in the
high-tech district west of Portland, Oregon.”
“Computer Associates, Fujitsu, and Hitachi today became the
latest companies to join the original lab sponsors. Miracle Linux,
Mitsubishi and Covalent joined original members Caldera, Dell,
Linuxcare, LynuxWorks, Red Hat, SGI, SuSE, TurboLinux and VA Linux
as additional contributors and sponsors. The lab is managed by an
independent board and officers, as well as a full-time director,
and supporting staff.”
“The OSDL is the industry’s first independent, non-profit lab
that’s designed to provide open source developers with access to
high-end, “enterprise-class” (expensive) hardware, so that
enterprise-class open source projects can be developed and
tested.”
