“Hewlett-Packard has begun worldwide shipment of its HP 9000
Superdome Unix server, which combines support and services
offerings normally reserved for mainframe customers with the option
of multiple-choice CPUs and eventually multiple operating systems.
HP has positioned Superdome for large dot-com companies such as
Amazon.com, service providers such as America Online, and
data-intensive corporations that are developing their
electronic-business strategies, Mark Hudson, worldwide marketing
manager at HP 9000 business, said Thursday.”
“Amazon currently uses HP’s V-Class servers, but will begin
bringing at least two Superdomes online over the next several
months, Hudson said. As an early access customer, Amazon has had
the Superdome systems for several weeks in a pre-production phase,
he added.”
“The Superdome supports HP’s PA-RISC 8600 CPU and its
successors, and Intel’s IA-64 chip architecture. It supports the
HP-UX 11i operating system and will be capable of supporting HP-UX,
Windows NT, and Linux simultaneously after Intel begins mass
shipment of its IA-64 chip this year.”
