“International Business Machines Corp.’s (IBM.N) No. 2 executive
is set to beat the drums around Big Blue’s latest plans for Linux
— the alternative software system which IBM sees as a lynch pin of
its long-run comeback strategy. Sam Palmisano, the heir-apparent to
Chairman and Chief Executive Louis Gerstner, plans to unveil new
services and technologies to boost Linux in a speech at the
LinuxWorld Expo trade show here on Wednesday, IBM said.”
“Showing Linux’s readiness for use in complex corporate
computer networks, IBM will reveal plans to manage Linux-based
computer systems anywhere within a global business network using
its centralized Tivoli management system. The IBM executive will
also point to how T-Systems, a Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGn.DE) unit,
is installing Linux on an IBM mainframe to manage massive e-mail
databases for its customers.”
“IBM, which generated about 38 percent of its revenue from
services consulting work last year, is pushing to expand its
services to help companies determine how best to use Linux. Dan
Kusnetzky, analyst at research firm International Data Corp., said
he thought IBM’s services will make the difference in whether Linux
moves into the corporate mainstream.”
