Supercluster” compliations of Linux allow researchers in
many fields computational power that otherwise would be difficult
to afford. Genomic research, weather prediction, medicine, physics,
and chemistry stand to benefit from the new availability of
supercomputing power.

“IBM, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA), and Incyte Genomics of Palo Alto, Calif. all currently have
or are planning the implementation of Linux as a massive PC cluster
to provide supercomputer performance without the supercomputer
cost.”

“Incyte is one company currently involved in the mammoth task of
mapping the human genome. To accomplish this feat, it runs the
world’s largest commercial Linux “farm,” with at least 2,000 Linux
boxes processing millions of jobs every day.”
