NewsBytes: IBM Using Linux In More Servers

“IBM this week is raising its stakes in the Linux operating
system (OS) arena by announcing that more of its servers will
support the Unix-flavored OS.”

“Taking its cue from the growing worldwide community of Linux
developers, Michael Borman, senior vice president of Worldwide
Sales, Web Servers of IBM’s Enterprise Systems Group, told
Newsbytes that the company has considered tapping the rich source
of potential enterprise applications emerging out of the Linux
development community and using them for building next-generation
servers.”

IBM is not what it was in the 1970s. Linux is big and we
don’t want to miss it. Also, we want to bring Linux into our new
RS-6000 servers
,” the executive said.”

“For IBM to embrace the increasingly popular OS is considered
big news. However, Borman stressed that the company is even
expanding on that idea and is considering making Linux the OS for
servers running “high-volume enterprise” applications.”
