Alliance for Open Media will develop a royalty-free video codec

Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix announced formation of the Alliance for Open Media. This is an open-source project that will develop next-generation media formats, codecs and technologies. Together they will develop a new video codec as a royalty-free specification, instead of commercial codecs like MPEG.
