Fairfax IT: Big boys buoy up Linux

“Writing a column like this about trends in open source and
Linux is a bit like trying to track an ocean wave – by the time
it’s spotted, another has overtaken it. So it happened late last
month, as an avalanche of vendors formally declared their growing
marketing, sales and support commitments to Linux.”

“Hewlett-Packard’s Australian market development manager for the
Netserver, David Booth, expects Linux to steal market share from
Windows NT this year and next.”

“I think you’ll see people are moving towards Linux for
robustness and reliability,” Booth said. “In quite a few instances
it could take away sales from NT. Speaking personally, I believe
Linux will be the boom OS this year and next because of its price,
performance and Unix-like flavour.”
