GNULinux.com: Debian 2.1 Review

“After the installation is finished you will be left at a
command prompt where you will be asked your login and password (set
earlier in the install program). From there you are on your own to
explore the system. Debian does not start you in a graphical
interface immediately, which is good and bad. It’s good because it
forces the new user to learn the system and get to know the
internals of Linux. but it’s bad for the same reason. You still
need to configure X, set up sound and customize your
environment.”

One of the strongest points of this distribution is the
apt-get program which updates your software easily and is a great
way to keep everything in your system up to speed.
This is one
reason we didn’t fault the distribution with having some older
packages. Very handy feature!”

“We would not recommend Debian for the GUI-centric crowd or for
those who aren’t willing to invest some time learning Linux in
depth. Debian is a true hackers (in the good sense) distribution
that is for those who want to learn and have a great amount of
control over their system. If you feel up to the challenge of
taking Linux head-on and really learning something about this very
stable, popular distribution, then go out and buy the commercial
version of Debian (nothing beats having a good book to help you
through any problems encountered). This distribution is probably
the hardest to configure for newbies, but you come away from the
installation and initial use of Debian as if you had learned
something instead of just pressing a bunch of buttons to
install.”
