Internet Week: SCO Raises Cluster Bar… Combines Power Of 12 Intel Servers

“SCO’s newly released clustering software for UnixWare allows IT
organizations to combine the computing power of up to 12
Intel-architecture servers.

‘This is the highest-end cluster platform for Unix on Intel,’
said Giga Information Group analyst Brad Day. ‘Among the Unix
players, this is about as good as it gets.’

UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters, which SCO developed in conjunction
with Compaq’s Tandem business unit, uses Single System Image (SSI)
technology to allow multiple servers to act as a single computer,
multiplying computing power and providing backup for each other in
case of individual servers’ failure.”

“While the clustering software boosts SCO’s appeal to enterprise
users, SCO still needs to attract software developers to
build packaged applications on its platform, Day said. This becomes
especially critical as Linux increases in popularity and
challenges UnixWare as an Intel-architecture Unix operating
system.

But SCO isn’t treating Linux as a hated competitor. SCO last
week launched Linux professional services, including audits to
determine user needs for Linux, along with deployment and
configuration management and maintenance services.”
