“The specs for the ATI FireGL X1 released at the end of July
were definitely something to write home about. The FGL-9700
processor, with a clock speed of 325 MHz, a development based on
the Radeon 9700, boasts no less than eight parallel pixel
pipelines, four rendering units, a fully programable floating point
pixel unit, and 256 Mbytes of DDR RAM hitched up to a 256 bit bus
to allow transfer rates between the graphics processor and the
frame buffer of up to 20 Gbytes/sec. Additionally, the manufacturer
assures us that the adapter can display an infinite number of
colors simultaneously to provide for photorealistic graphics.“In contrast to its competitors from 3Dlabs and nVidia, the
FireGL X1 makes do with a comparitively small and quiet fan. At
least, any noise it may have made had very little effect on the
noise levels in the vicinity of our lab computer, an HP Workstation
X2100. The pre-release model that driver developer Alexander Stohr
brought along to the Linux New Media labs already boasted the
final, patch-free PCB layout. The adapter needs two slots due to
the connector for a 3D glasses…”
