Every year InfoWorld honors 100 leaders in Information
Technology who have produced the most innovative business
solutions. This year, Linux was central to several of those
solutions.
Jeff Meyers of Web Point Communications linked Gasboy robot
roadside fueling sites for US Fleet to an Apache Web server running
under Linux to publish errors and status messages to a Web site,
trigger pagers and send e-mail notifications to alert both
technicians and the head office.
The Oregon State University Entomology Department used a Red Hat
Web server to publish weather data and computer models to predict
the future coddling moth bug levels for growers in Washington,
Oregon and Idaho.
Quad Tech’s Curt Gran also used Red Hat and Apache for a Web
site accessing a SQL database that helps technicians identify,
download and install the appropriate updated versions of software
for their programmable paper folder and press controllers.
The
winners were chosen by an InfoWorld editorial review team from
300 nominees chosen by InfoWorld’s readers.
This is the fifth year InfoWorld has held the competition.
