Linuxcare: Dear Lina: Leaping Logfiles!

[ Thanks to Zack

for this link. ]

“Dear Lina,
I recently noticed my disk is almost out of space. It’s not
like I’m doing anything fancy with it (I have another machine where
I have a big MP3 collection, I would have expected it there). I
looked around and /var/log is full of these huge files.
I
mean, it’s nice to know what my box is thinking about when I’m not
around, but can’t I get it to get rid of old stuff?”

“Logfiles filling up a disk is a problem that can creep up on
you and break things in mysterious ways. For instance, if you’re
editing a file and try to save it when the disk is full, some
editors will give an error. So keeping some free space on the disk
at all times is very important, and you should make sure your
system is set up properly so this doesn’t happen again, dear. Just
be thankful you caught onto the situation before losing important
data.”
