“The original Linux Labs (since 1995, not the new “Linux
Lab”) has introduced a 1U rackmount server using AMD’s Duron
processor. The new Duron 1U server comes preconfigured with Debian
or Redhat GNU/Linux and serial console. Web-based system
administration tools are included as part of the base
system.”
“This Duron 1U server packs a powerful punch in a minimum of
rack space. In its 1U (1.75”) case height, this server, configured
with a base 700Mhz Duron chip, runs idle at more than 1400
Bogomips. By way of comparison, a similarly-configured AMD 550 Mhz
K6-2 idles at just above 1100 Bogomips. Comparing with Celerons, an
article on Ars Technica’s web site states, “The Duron handily beats
out the Celeron (even when overclocked up to a 100MHz FSB) and even
beats the Pentium III at the same speed at times.” http://www.ars-technica.com/reviews/2q00/duron/duron-3.html).
As stated in Tom’s Hardware, “In fact Duron wipes the floor with
Intel’s Celeron processor…” (http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q2/000619/duron-08.html).”
“The Duron processor runs cooler than an AMD K6-2 chip in the
same configuration, which reduces the risk of overheating. The
1U-height space, however, even for the Duron chip, creates cooling
isues which should be addressed by any engineering firm preparing
servers for mission critical uses. Linux Labs has engineered and
extensively tested special cooling solutions for both the K6-2 and
the Duron chips for use in 1U servers. Linux Labs’ engineers are
confident the special design of these servers overcome any concern
about overheating, under even the heaviest loads.”
