OLinux: How and when was CollabNet created? Who was the group and what were the ideas that guided CollabNet start? How the initial fund was raised?


Bill Portelli: Brian Behlendorf, co-founder of the Apache Software Foundation, co-founded CollabNet with O’Reilly & Associates in July 1999. We received a small seed round of funding from Benchmark Capital and I came on board in August 1999. CollabNet announced a $35 million dollar series B round of funding on June 5, 2000. Participants included: Benchmark Capital, Bowman Capital, Dell, HP, Intel, Novell, Oracle Corporation, Sun Microsystems and Marc Andreessen.”


OLinux: What are CollabNet’s main clients, Oracle, HP.?


Bill Portelli: CollabNet currently has several Fortune 500 clients including: Hewlett-Packard, Oracle Corporation, and Sun Microsystems, as well as customers ranging from Application Service Providers (ASPs) to Internet firms, hardware and software providers to companies from industries such as marketing and publishing.”


OLinux: How important will be Alphanumerica acquisition for CollabNet: what were the main objectives buying a web design company? Are there any other acquisitions on your plans?


Bill Portelli: We think our two companies share a common vision for creating the next generation of global, collaborative software development environments. By combining CollabNet’s expertise in collaborative development practices with Alphanumerica’s background in Web site and Web application development, we can offer our customers rapid implementation of new Web-based software development environments.”
