“I sat down and spent a couple hours reading “Learning Debian
GNU/Linux” by Bill McCarty. If you can’t install Debian Linux
following the steps in this book, you’re just not trying. It
doesn’t cover those obscure situations where your PixelMuncher
video card has an IRQ conflict with your NoisesAhoy! sound card.
His first concern is getting Linux installed and getting you to a
command line prompt. You can fine tune the X Windows server later.
Good idea. In that vein, he also explains that one can have Linux
installed but the warm and fuzzy GUI is another matter. Windows
users may find that an odd concept.”
“This book is written for the Windows user who is ready to dump
Windows, even if only temporarily, and is ready to try Linux. Talk
about a “paradigm change”. Finally someone recognizes the fact that
Windows users are only about 90% of the installed user
base….”
“My overall impression of this book is quite good. If this
book were titled, “Debian Linux for Windows Users”, O’Reilly could
probably sell more copies. It’s also a more accurate description of
the book.“
