“We tested Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Windows NT Server 4.0
and Red Hat Linux 6.1 Professional using Ziff-Davis’s ServerBench
4.1 suite. ServerBench measures a server’s performance when used as
an application server utilising a client/server model. All three
operating systems reached a similar peak in performance.”
“At a glance
- Peak performance for Windows 2000 Server, NT Server 4.0 and
Linux 6.1 - Professional is roughly equal at around 520 transactions per
second (TPS) in our ServerBench test. - While both Microsoft operating systems manage to sustain
performance right up to the 48-client limit of our test network,
Linux 6.1 Professional showed a steep dip once 24 clients were
added. - Linux 6.1 Professional achieved a 69 per cent better
performance than Windows 2000 Server with a single client
connected. - Linux 6.1 Professional performed badly out of the box, but
performance can be tweaked to match that of Windows.”
