Review: Qimo Linux for Kids

“The Qimo cd comes with two modes: LiveCD and Install. The first
option, which is aptly named “Run Qimo from your computer without
installing anything” simplifies the understanding of a LiveCD down
to the bare basics. IE, it’s an OS that runs from a disk but
doesn’t mess with your computer.

“The LiveCD itself is a little slow getting going, and takes a
bit to get past the hardware detection and into the full boot
sequence. And even that takes a little bit to complete. (so
patience is a virtue when booting the LiveCD) In overall boot
speed, the Qimo LiveCD is on the lower third of the spectrum for
total boot speed, as it takes well over three minutes or more in
some cases to reach the desktop.

“Once on the desktop however, things get a bit quicker. This is
where you’re greeted by a young Eskimo boy who’s the Qimo mascot.
It’s sort of a nod towards Tux, while presenting something to
children that they can more openly relate to. IE, another kid.”
