Ultra AXi Offers 64-Bit, High-Performance Engine for Linux
Markets
On August 10, Bell Microproducts announced a Linux server
platform, aimed at OEMS, VARs and integrators serving the
education, R&D and Internet service providers market places.
The platform is powered by Sun Microsystems’ UltraSPARC(tm)-IIi
processor on a SPARCengine Ultra(tm) AXi board running the Linux
operating system. Bell Micro’s offering is part of Sun’s strategy
to enable Linux-based products by providing key technologies to
companies that will develop Linux applications for specific
markets.
Bell Micro will manufacture and market the server platform under
its “TradeMark” brand, and will begin shipping in August. This
server is designed to provide a platform for customers wishing to
run Linux while leveraging the price and performance advantages of
the Ultra AXi. Applications include high-volume data
communications, Internet services deployment and graphics
transmission. The server provides a forward migration path and
flexibility for the future as application needs change.
Sun’s support of the ATX-based product line makes it an ideal
choice for Linux-based products and applications. With a detailed
SPARC-based product roadmap and a commitment to the ATX board form
factor, Sun offers scalable, open-architecture OEM solutions,
providing a reliable complement to Linux-based systems. Designed to
meet critical, highly demanding needs such as communications,
networking and imaging, the Ultra AXi comes with a robust feature
set, with speeds from 270MHz to 440MHz. It supports up to one
gigabyte of error checking and correcting (ECC) memory, on-board
dual channel ultra-wide SCSI, integrated 10/100Mbit Ethernet, and
six 33MHz/32-bit PCI slots.
