“The annual $25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award went to
The Samba Team, a band of open source developers dedicated to
making Linux interoperate with Microsoft Corp. file systems, said
Linux guru Linus Torvalds.”
“Like many open source efforts, this one started out years ago
as “a bit of a hack,” according to Samba team member Andrew
Tridgell, senior open source researcher for Linuxcare, Canberra,
Australia….”
“A lot of system administrators used to smuggle Samba into their
NT environments, and the only comment they got [from users] was
that the file server didn’t crash anymore,” he said.”
“Like many devout open sourcers, Tridgell hopes the need for
Samba software will dissolve as Linux takes hold of more corporate
desktops.”
