“Emblix has set three major targets: promoting embedded Linux;
standardization of peripheral technologies such as software
components, tools, and APIs; and information exchange with related
organizations in Japan and overseas. “In the global embedded-system
arena, we want to establish Emblix’s position so that it can
represent Japan’s needs,” said John H. M. Cheuck, director of
TurboLinux Japan and the acting vice chairman of Emblix.”
“At the Embedded Systems Conference to be held in San Jose,
Calif., in September, Emblix plans to make a joint presentation
with the U.S.-based Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC). Founded
in March, ELC has about 80 members, none Japanese, according to
Cheuck. Emblix was established independently of ELC to satisfy the
special needs of Japan’s embedded-system designers. But
collaboration with ELC will be one of its important activities,
the Emblix founders said.”
“The unique needs and requirements of the Japanese embedded
industry are very important to the global development of embedded
Linux,” said Michael Tiemman, chief technology officer at Red Hat
Software (stock: RHAT) and acting director of the ELC. Jim Ready,
chief executive officer of MontaVista Software, who is also active
in ELC, said that the two organizations together “will lead in
making embedded Linux the new international standard for embedded
computing and Internet appliances.”
