Gerhardt, Doc Searls (Linux Journal), Arne Flones and Russ
Pavlicek; are back from their end of the summer vacation and have
another great show lined up tonight on The Linux Show!! Eric
Raymond will give us his two cents on Segment Two tonight.
Segment One- The News. We will cover
THE HOT NEWS of the last few weeks tonight. In
particular, we will talk about Linux Desktops (Red Hat finally
jumps in), cool wireless/dsl stuff (special announcement) and Doc
will tell us about his Gnomedex experience.
Segment Two- Have we reached the limit?– Has
Linux gone as far as it can go?
Tonight we will be dicussing the core thesis of a theory that will
be proposed in an article at Linux Journal in the next day or two.
The essence of that thesis is that Linux has succeeded in becoming
a part of basic infrastructure, that battle is already won. But,
can Linux continue to grow, and more important allow businesses
that are pushing the development of Linux to succeed, with the
restraints put onto Linux (and thus the vendors) by the ridgidness
of the GPL.
Tonight we propose the thesis that Linux and Open Source
development surrounding Linux may grind to a halt, once we get
beyond basic infrastructure issues. The cause is two-fold, the GPL
itself, and our own damn community and our religious fervor in
supporting free Beer and the GPL. Have we, the
Linux Community damned a significant percentage of our vendors to
mediocrity and even bankruptcy?
When you talk about that thing we all call The Linux
Community we are only talking about a world wide hard core
community of 70,000 to 100,000 people. There are lots of other
users out there, in fact millions. They use Linux because of what
it does, and because its cheap. Most of those “others” could give a
damn about the GPL, until they look at linux and how it impacts the
cash flow cycle of their businesses.
We learned a great deal a couple weeks ago having attended a few
conferences. We will discuss those conferences tonight, and the
opinions of how main stream IT percieves us Linux
geeks. There is a new perception in the land of Linux, and most of
that perception is based upon the GPL. We need to know about it,
understand what it means, make changes accordingly; or be willing
to accept the consequences of possibly becoming historically
Irrelevant.
We have plenty of evidence to support this thesis. The question
as a community is; are we willing to face the possiblity of
the truth of this thesis?
