Wired: DVD Wars: Defense Rallies

A letter from an attorney representing the owner of the
Connecticut 2600 Web site argues that the case should be dismissed
since no piracy has taken place and the DeCSS utility was designed
to allow Linux users to play legally purchased DVDs.

“The 12-page document also asks US District Judge Robert
Chatigny to throw out the case, filed in Hartford, Connecticut,
since the eight motion picture studios who are the plaintiffs
haven’t been wronged.”

“Instead, the letter argues, the DVD Copy Control Association,
which licenses the technology, should be suing. “It is the DVD CCA
that owns the license rights to CSS technology, and the motion
picture industry cannot seek to prosecute the rights of another,”
says the letter written by Avery Champman of Chapman and Associates
of New Haven.”
